Founded in 2008 and located at Chandkheda, Ahmedabad, Gujarat, IIT Gandhinagar has gradually developed into an institute of fame. Initially, it was established temporary within the Vishwakarma Government Engineering College Campus in Chandkheda. The first batch of 103 students was divided into three engineering streams. USP OF IITGN

The institute conducts an event called ‘Open House’ catering to the prospective students. Board of Governors

The institute is managed by a Board of Governors. The board comprises academicians, researchers, industrial leaders, and administrators. Raghunath Anant Mashelkar was the first Chairman of the Board of Governors of IITGN. Baldev Raj is the current chairman.

Senate

The Senate is a statutory body responsible for all the academic matters of the institute, including monitoring and making improvements in course structure and curriculum. The current Senate of the IIT GN was constituted on April 5, 2010. It hosts members of faculty, and advisers from academia and industry. Prior to its constitution, the functions of the Senate were being performed by an academic council comprising the heads of departments at IIT Bombay, the mentor institute.

Key Academic Officials

Key officials of the institute are the Director, assisted by the deans of Academic Affairs, Student Affairs, Faculty Affairs, Research and Development, and the coordinators of individual disciplines. Presently Prof. Sudhir Kumar Jain is heading the institution as the Director. He is on deputation from IIT Kanpur. Prof Jain is one of India’s leading earthquake engineers. He set up the National Information Centre of Earthquake Engineering (NICEE) at IITK and developed the National Programme on Earthquake Engineering Education (NPEEE), supported by the Government of India. He is president-elect of the International Association for Earthquake Engineering.

Convocation

On 22 July 2012, the first convocation of IIT Gandhinagar was held, within the temporary campus premises. 86 students graduated with Bachelor of Technology degrees in Chemical, Electrical, and Mechanical Engineering. The Chief guest for the occasion was N. R. Narayana Murthy, Chief Mentor and Chairman Emeritus of Infosys. The convocation attire for IITGN was designed by the National Institute of Design (NID).

Admission Procedure

As with any IIT, the JEE ADVANCED exam is the qualifying criteria for taking up the undergraduate programs while the GATE exam is meant for post-graduate programs.

The online application form for IIT Gandhinagar M.Tech Admission 2017 is now available from March 27, 2017 onwards. Candidates can fill the application forms for the M.Tech admissions at IIT Gandhinagar till April 16, 2017. For admissions to M.Tech programmes and graduate programmes at the IIT Gandhinagar, candidates will have to appear for a written test or personal interview. Candidates with valid GATE scores may be considered for direct admissions. In 2011, 117 undergraduate students were admitted to the 2012 batch, and 134 students were admitted to the 2013 batch. Admission to IIT Gandhinagar’s graduate programs are even more competitive than the undergraduate programs, with a selectivity ratio 0f 0.5%.

Minimum Eligibility Criteria

  • Minimum of 55% marks / 5.5 (on a 10 point scale) in B.E. /B.Tech./M.Sc. or equivalent in appropriate branches (50% marks for SC /ST)
  • Candidates who have a valid GATE score (at the time of interview/written test) are eligible to apply for M.Tech. GATE is not required for application to M.Tech. on a part-time basis or for the PGDIIT programme.
  • B.Tech. graduates from the IITs with CGPA/CPI of 8.0 or above (on scale of 10) would be eligible for admission without having to appear in GATE.
  • Candidates applying for the regular M.Tech. programme and who are sponsored by their employers do not require GATE score and can be considered as sponsored candidates provided (a) candidate has been in service for more than 2 years (b) employer grants 2 years of study leave and (c) employer undertakes to financially support the candidate for the entire duration of 2 years. The eligibility criteria mentioned above is minimum and the disciplines may use higher cut-off levels for short-listing. Candidates belonging to SC/ST/PD categories would be eligible for relaxations, as per norms, in the selection criteria.

Fee Waivers

  1. 100% Tuition Fee waiver for SC/ST/PH students.
  2. Full remission of the Tuition Fee for General & OBC students whose family income is less than Rs.1 lakh per annum.
  3. Remission of 2/3rd of the Tuition Fee for General & OBC students whose family income is between Rs.1 lakh to Rs.5 lakh per annum.

The placement cell at IIT, Gandhinagar came into existence in the year 2010, with an objective to provide career opportunities to the students. Internships

The Institute considers summer internships to be a quintessential component of education and encourages its students to go for internships at least twice during their entire B.Tech. programme. The principal objective of summer internships is to expose the students to the challenges of the real world before they graduate. The typical internship period is of 8-12 weeks during the summer, from mid-May to mid-July.

The CDS has endeavoured to develop several organization-level channels, through which all the internships are facilitated. Such an arrangement saves time and effort of the students and helps build long-term relationships between IITGN and participating organizations.

IITGN students have undergone international internships at institutions like Caltech, Clemson University, Texas A&M, Columbia University, National University of Singapore, Duke University and so on. Many of them have also undertaken internships at institutes and industries of national reputation including the Indian Institutes of Technology, Indian Institutes of Management and research organizations like Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), IPR (Institute of Plasma Research) and various multinational corporations.

Campus Overview

 IIT Gandhinagar is placed in the state of Gujarat, which is known for it’s rich cultural as well as state-of-the-art infrastructure, thriving industries, and many modern amenities. Interesting Facts

In January 2016, the Palaj campus of Indian Institute of Technology, Gandhinagar (IITGn), bagged the honour of being the greenest campus in India. The campus, built on 400 acres land, has been given a five-star rating by The Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment for Large Developments (GRIHA LD). IITGn has received an overall impact score of 25.9 percent. With this, IITGn’s Palaj campus achieves the distinction of being the first campus in India to be rated a 5-Star, the highest GRIHA LD rating, at a masterplan level.

Co-curricular Activities

IITGN has socio-cultural outreach programs for students. Sarkar is a weekly program designed to make the process of learning science easy and more intuitive. It has completed the phase one as of 2016 and is now looking at expanding. Nyasa is the award-winning HUDCO Best Practices to Improve the Living Environment 2013-14 program. It was established in 2011 to improve the welfare of the construction workers and their families in the campus.Nyasa currently runs three schools for the workers’ children.

India Ki Khoj

India-Ki-Khoj (Discovering India) is an intensive program fostering the understanding and appreciation of India through lectures and field visits. Designed and led by members of the Humanities and Social Sciences Program, the ten-day program brings together IITGN students and visiting students from overseas. The first India-Ki-Khoj was held in December 2011 and hosted students from Caltech. India-Ki-Khoj has been designed to help overseas students understand how a tradition-bound and diverse country such as India has survived as a nation, and understand the many layers of that diversity. Through a combination of academic lectures and field-visits, the program takes the students through India of the past, present and future helping them relate India’s ancient traditions of philosophy, science and technology to a present-day India, and helping to identify continuities as well as changes that India has made through the centuries. The programs includes discussions of modern India’s economic trends, culture and history, poetry and films, caste and community structures, and enables participants to “appreciate a country that eludes easy definitions”.

Global health and development

Over 40 students from various institutes learned how to contribute to global health and development at IIT Gandhinagar in a month-long event called Summer Institute on Global Health and Development, which concluded on June 12, 2015. The event was jointly organised by IITGN and the University of Saskatchewan, Canada, with the support of Gujarat Alkalies and Chemicals Limited (GACL).

Research

In 2011, IIT Gandhinagar and the Physical Research Laboratory signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that ensures research collaborations and exchanges between the two institutions at the level of advanced Ph.D. programs in theoretical physics, astrophysics, and atmospheric sciences. The collaboration facilitates an exchange of research ideas between Ph.D. students and the faculties of both institutions.

NTT Facilities, Japan, and Gujarat Energy Development Agency (GEDA), Gandhinagar, have each provided a 10 kW roof-top solar photovoltaic (PV) system to the Institute. The system provided by NTT Facilities consists of sixty-four thin-film modules (rated 150W) made by Solar Frontier, Japan, while the system sponsored by GEDA consists of forty-four multi-crystalline silicon modules (rated 230 W) produced by Jain Irrigation Systems, India. Each PV system is expected to generate about 15000 kWh of electricity every year and reduce total CO2 emissions by about 28 tonnes. These systems have already started to reduce the energy bills of the Institute and are being used for research in collaboration with Underwriters Laboratories.

Hostels

The B.Tech, M.Tech, MA, MSc and PhD programs are residential programs, and therefore, IIT Gandhinagar provides residential facilities for all students. Accommodation is offered in six different hostels, namely: Aibaan, Beauki, Chimair, Duven, Emiet, and Firpeal.

IIT Gandhinagar believes in ownership of campus by the students. All hostels are managed by students through the hostel maintenance committee. In each hostel, a resident caretaker follows up on all routine maintenance issues, and the warden is ultimately responsible for hostel administration. Each student is issued basic furniture including a chair, study table, cot and mattress at the beginning of the academic year. Students in all hostels have access to a common room, laundry and canteen facilities within their respective hostels.

In addition, there are pantries in each floor of the hostels which have refrigerators, microwave ovens and induction stoves. There is a general store within the hostel premises to provide the students with basic necessities like stationary, toiletries and snacks.

College Festivals

IITGN celebrates a festival every two months. In late September or early October, it has the technical summit AMALTHEA followed in November by JASHN, the intra-college cult-fest. This culminates in BLITHCHRON, the highly regarded cultural festival and the show-stopping HALLA BOL, which is the intra-college sports-fest. Add to that “infy” clubs like Music club, Dance club, Coding club, Business club, Photography club et al and what you have is a jam-packed extra-curricular calendar.
