Academics

Right from its inception, IIT Hyderabad has focused on intellectual growth and learning. Due to its dynamic academic structure, the coursework is relatively well-developed and offers better exposure to its students in their respective fields compared to other institutes. This is one of the reasons that resulted in IIT Hyderabad been recognized as one of the top 10 institutes in the country.

IIT Hyderabad started initially with only three courses been offered, namely, Computer Science & Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering and the total student intake then was 111. This has now expanded to a student intake capacity of 1657 with numerous courses been offered across as many as 14 different departments.

One of the notable innovation of IIT Hyderabad in academics was the introduction of fractal academics. The key idea of this is to atomize courses, provide breadth and depth, emphasize courses in liberal arts as well as creative arts, emphasize project work, and create an interactive learning ambiance. In this approach, the students will be well equipped to handle challenges of any job or challenges of post-graduate research. IIT Hyderabad places strong emphasis on inter-disciplinary learning which can prove useful for students in the future in case they want to switch fields. IIT Hyderabad has welcomed several visiting faculties from abroad (Japan, USA, China, France, etc.) who taught several regular courses.

In brief, the academic structure offers a highly flexible and strong learning environment along with which students have enough opportunities to develop their entrepreneurship skills. It is providing an environment wherein students and faculty are not afraid to experiment and celebrate their idea.

Inter-Disciplinary Centres

IIT Hyderabad lays a strong emphasis on inter-disciplinary academics and is home to various inter-disciplinary centres.

  • Center for Healthcare Entrepreneurship (CfHE)
  • Fabless Chip Design Incubator
  • Design Innovation Centre
  • Centre for Cyber Physical Systems and IoT
  • Teaching Learning Centre (TLC)

Campus

The campus of IIT Hyderabad, just like all other IITs, boasts of all the modern amenities and constant efforts have been put to make it more student-friendly. The campus of IIT Hyderabad was shifted to its permanent location this year which spans more than 576 acres. It is located at Kandi near Sangareddy and is close to the Outer Ring Road (Hyderabad), it lies on NH-65 thus giving it easy access to the city of Hyderabad.

The campus consists of academic area, residential area for students, residential area for faculty and staff and other support facilities. The growth of the campus was planned in three phases with a corresponding increase in the physical infrastructure and support facilities to accommodate an increase in the number of students in established programs and new programs of the future. The phase 1 of construction was completed which consists of 3 academic blocks, 10 hostel blocks each having a capacity of around 200 students, central library and other common infrastructural facilities. The hostels have good connectivity to institute main gate through internal transportation.

Termed as “smart-campus”, it has facilities such as cooling system, own power generation and water harvesting. The campus has long plans to establish 5 MW solar power plant to meet its own demand and addition planning for surplus generation to the grid. The campus would have water harvesting for its own consumption and water treatment plant that can be used for other purposes like washing and gardening.

Special Lecture Series by IIT-H Consortium of Japan

Occasionally, leading Japanese scholars in science and technology from not only academia but also private sectors as well as the Government of Japan visit to IITH and provide special lectures to enhance knowledge networking among intellectuals in India and Japan. Such lectures are expected to be “Challenging Lectures”, where students and faculties at IITH are stimulated through learning the current issues and discussions about science and technology.
The schedule of each lecture is informed from Director’s office to faculties and students at IITH in advance as follows:

Study in Japan

Providing opportunities to study in Japan is one of the important aspects of the IITH-Japan Collaboration. There are various Japanese Government Scholarships to enhance such opportunities. The following websites can introduce some useful information to those who are interested in study in Japan. In addition a number of Japanese universities also have various scholarships.

Collaborative educational project to foster innovation(i.school)

A school for innovations on the lines of the University of Tokyo’s i.school will come up on the premises of Indian Institute of Technology-Hyderabad (IIT-H). While the IIT-H will act as the nodal agency and take the lead role, it would rope in some other institutes from across the nation to make this idea a reality. This was announced by Professor U.B. Desai, Director, IIT-H, while addressing students at a three-day workshop on the i.school, held at the institute on Sunday. He said innovators needed to think ahead and possess the nature of risk-taking.

i.school is an educational project established in 2009 by the Centre for Knowledge Structuring, University of Tokyo, with the aim of fostering innovative leaders. This institute has been conducting workshops at IIT-H for the past five years with a mix of students from IIT-H and the University of Tokyo. The workshop is being facilitated by Professor Hideyuki Horii, Executive Director, i.school.

“The innovation workshop is nothing but the processing of information by a group of people. There are three types of creativity — combination, exploration, and transformation — that turn an idea into reality. Innovators should have the skill sets, the mindset and the motivation [for it],” said Professor Horri, while addressing the students.

Professor Horii also explained how ‘creative destruction’ — breaking a device to learn its inner workings — has transformed the way students think. He stressed the need for human-centered innovations.

Entrepreneurship Opportunities

Inventions and innovations are keywords on which the foundation of IITH is based. Taking forward this ideology to a higher level of implementation, IITH have started “i-TIC Foundation IIT Hyderabad” (i-TIC), a society, which has launched an incubation center (Technology Business Incubator – TBI funded by Department of Science & Technology (DST), Government of India) to achieve this goal of crafting/ producing an ‘amalgam’ of research and industry by creating a very supportive and nourishing environment wherein research concepts can be taken up and integrated with industry for commercialization. It is an excellent opportunity for those young scholars and alumni who wish to be successful entrepreneurs and see their hard work/ core competencies envisage from paper to reality/ see the light of the day and progress further to the top echelon. In order to achieve this knowledge based entrepreneurship, i-TIC provides the necessary facilities, guidance and mentoring, by the faculty members of IITH and the industry experts, to develop an ecosystem for entrepreneurship.
