NEW DELHI: More women are showing interest in engineering and architecture courses as indicated by the increase in the number of aspirants for the Joint Entrance Examination – Main (JEE-Main) 2020 January exams. Compared to last year there are 15,247 more women aspirants who have applied for engineering entrance this year. Also for the first time the National Testing Agency (NTA) has opened registration for general-EWS reservation for which 81,413 aspirants have registered, which is close to the number of SC candidates taking the exams.
Overall, there are a little over 9.34 lakh aspirants who have registered for first of the two JEE-main 2020 engineering tests, while another 1.38 lakh have applied for JEE (main) 2020 architecture/planning test for the January 2020 exam. The total number of test takers has increased marginally, especially for architecture admissions this year.
In contrast, the number of male candidates for the engineering tests have decreased by over 20,000 this year. The number of SC and ST candidates too have marginally decreased. In all for engineering and architecture a total of 11.18 lakh candidates have registered for the January 2020 exam as compared to 11 lakh in January 2019.
For the first time since 2014, the number of registration for the JEE-Main has increased after a continuous decline for 5 years.
